Common Cold vs The Flu: How to Tell the Difference

Feeling unwell and wondering if it’s a common cold or the flu? Both can cause a runny nose, sore throat, coughing, and tiredness. However, influenza (the flu) often starts more suddenly and can cause more intense symptoms.

Knowing the differences can help you understand your symptoms and when to seek medical advice, especially if you become sick while travelling in Bali.

Common Cold vs. Influenza: What Are the Differences?

Not every cough or cold is caused by influenza. Although both illnesses affect the respiratory system, they differ in their causes and typical symptoms.

Can You Tell the Difference by Symptoms Alone?

Not always. Common cold and flu symptoms can overlap, and other respiratory infections, including COVID-19, can cause similar symptoms.

A cold often develops gradually, while influenza tends to start more suddenly. However, these patterns are only general clues and cannot confirm which infection you have.

If your symptoms are concerning, getting worse, or affecting your daily activities, a healthcare professional can assess your condition and advise whether further testing may be appropriate.

When Can a Rapid Influenza A/B Test Help?

If influenza is suspected, a rapid Influenza A/B test may help detect influenza viruses and support your doctor's assessment.

However, test accuracy varies depending on the test used, when the sample is collected, and other factors. A negative result does not always rule out influenza.

Your doctor can interpret the result alongside your symptoms and overall condition to help guide the next steps.

What Should You Do If You Feel Unwell in Bali?

If you develop cold or flu-like symptoms during your trip:

  • Get enough rest and avoid strenuous activities while feeling unwell.

  • Drink plenty of fluids to help maintain hydration.

  • Monitor your symptoms and pay attention to any changes.

  • Help prevent spreading infection by washing your hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and avoiding close contact with others while sick.

Seek medical advice if your symptoms worsen, your fever persists, or you are concerned about your condition. Seek urgent medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, confusion, or severe weakness.

People who are pregnant, have certain chronic medical conditions, or have a weakened immune system should seek medical advice early, as they may be at higher risk of flu complications. Antiviral treatment may be appropriate for some people and works best when started early.
